Hi all, so some of you may have seen this (now removed by OP) today, and I’d like to address some things.
I stand by my actions in the above linked post, but admit that I have a bit of a scorched earth mentality when it comes to political discussion here. I tend to overmoderate because those conversations go so sideways so fast, and I read the rule regarding politics in a more severe manner than some of the other Mods may. In this particular context, and in the name of full disclosure, I’d like to point out that I removed comments regarding Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and ones that were just downright confusing. Also in this context, as my stickied comment states, I got tired of picking my way through the post and just scrolled up and locked the whole thing, and this happened right about when I got to the back and forth regarding John McCain. I should have also removed the post, but again I tend not to do that. I like the “heads on stakes” look of moderated posts, and I think they serve a purpose for anyone who may use the search function or lurk here trying to sort out what is and isnt acceptable.
When I talk to officers about Command Climate and Esprit de Corps, I often mention that when one of us becomes a point of friction by name we have failed. The bureaucracy can be a challenge, the methodology can be evolving too slowly, the tactics can be poorly matched to the situation and mission, and that’s all ok. But when I or the boss are an obstacle, real or perceived, we’ve lost the Marines. So that’s why I’m stepping back here. I like this place too much to see it be about me, and today it became about me.
Before I go, I’d like to thank the users who have put up with me, and the other Mods who have become my friends, this is a great little community. I’m looking forward to using the report button again and spending more time with my family. Feel free to reach out if there’s ever anything I can do.
