How are Regiments numbered?

if you mess with me you are going to get stuck and you won’t even see it coming

Hi all.

Apparently there was a 782nd Motor Artillery Regiment and a 785th in the german Wehrmacht.

Does these numbers mean there were 783 other Motor Artillery Regiments?

How were these numbered? Were there all 785 Regiments at the same time?

If one Regiment was disbanded what happened to its number? Was it reused when a new Regiment is formed?

How is the numbering in the armies now, UK – US – Israel – Germany – etc.?

There is a 377th field artillery Regiment currently in the US Army, does this mean there is a 376th, 375th, 374th etc. too?
